Beachgolff® Beginnings

My brother and I went to the beach one day to practice our golf game sand-trap shot. Well, after hitting the sand for awhile our arms and backs got sore, so we started playing by lifting and tossing the ball. This was fun and I continued to develop special balls and clubs to play this new game.

Rules can be as simple as seeing who can toss the ball the farthest. Or you can create your own course in the sand. It’s really only limited by your imagination. Entire families can all be involved. Very little hand-eye coordination is needed. Just place the clubface directly on the ball, scoop, lift, and toss straight in front of you. And since you toss the ball instead of swinging the club, there is no back-swing that can hurt anyone.

The basic game is simple; challenge, freestyle, shapes, and fairway. Tournament rules are more strict and include shoreline play. Because the ocean water is dangerous, tournament play is restricted to resorts and official Beachgolff® events. The Extreme Beachgolff® ( XBG ) game will be adults only and is played in the shoreline and has adult themed rules.

Deluxe rules/instructions that are laminated to be water resistant are available. Plus the pages have metal grommeted bindings with metal rings so you can add other pages whenever you want. Pages that can be added later are tournament rules, additional scorecards, or XBG rules.

The beach remains a place of open space for all to enjoy. Beachgolff® is meant to expand the possibilities for fun at the beach. Playing in the sand, scratching out patterns, making sandcastles,.. all things that kids love to do at the beach.

The sand underfoot feels like freedom. The sea breeze smells of fond childhood memories. And the sight of the infinite ocean horizon touches my senses whenever I visit the beach. See the rest of this poem by (S)andy at Beachgolff’s poetry page.

Safety first!

Often spoken, and even more often forgotten about as the joy of a day at the beach intertwines in the mind of the average person. Safety first; what does it mean?

Precautions. When at the beach many dangers exsist that most people do not even think of. For example: How many of us think about falling rocks or land slides when at beaches with cliffs? or….. rising tides if on an adventure to a secluded spot? or…… jellyfish (jellies) that can do more than just sting? Shore is ruff.™ But the shore is also alot of fun!

How about the dangers from the giant ball of hydrogen that gives us life, but has an evil side too? Sun lotion/block of SPF15 is recommended as a minimum even if just going outside for a casual walk. Of course it depends on a persons skin type and the amount of sun tolerance their epidermis has acquired. But make no mistake about it, people that get alot of sun exposure often have skin cancer down the road. So protect your largest organ while at the beach and reapply that sunblock!

The beach is often very windy. Sand and other small particles can easily get in the eye/s while at the beach. Wear sunglasses, or for those that play Beachgolff®, we recommend sports eyegear that is strapped to the head. Modern sport goggles are made in very cool looking styles nowadays. In Beachgolff® we insist that players always wear eye protection.

And safety at the beach isn’t just for humans. When we visit the beach we are invading an ecosystem occupied by an enormous number of creatures that we often can’t even see. Plastic bags easily blow away from us and if in the ocean, can become a meal for a sea turtle that thinks it’s a jellyfish. And those six-pack plastic rings can cause animals trouble too. So it isn’t just unsightly litter that is often at the beach, lots of our garbage is deadly to sea creatures.

Surfrider.org is a great organization to join if you want to be part of a beach clean-up, or want to be involved in protecting your local surf. They have local chapters all along the U.S.A. and Australia. (surfrider.org.au)

So please, take care of yourself and those around you. Be safe!

Thank you for visiting.

Beachgolff® has a family game expected to be ready for retail sales in 2007. This family version of the game is played away from the water. Safer and easier than traditional golf; safer because there is no back-swing and easier because the clubface is placed directly on the ball. And if you don’t already know how Beachgolff® is played, visit the Beachgolff.com website and click on the overview button. The Extreme Beachgolff® game is played in and along the shoreline. This separation of a family game and an extreme game/sport version is due to the ocean being unforgiving and dangerous.

Beachgolff® is focused on providing a safe and high quality product that can be used year-round at the beach. Current product is reserved for customers of our Sanddollarrsm resort and executive retreat service. Ask your resort if they have Beachgolff for their guests.

The Extreme Beachgolff® (XBG) club is still under development. The club has a special grip to reduce slip, and is reinforced with carbon-Kevlar® fiber throughout the shaft and clubhead (the standard Beachgolff® club has a carbon-Kevlar® fiber reinforced clubhead). Pictures will soon be posted on Beachgolff.com of this amazing piece of marine grade sporting equipment.

Also under development are the balls for XBG. Everything possible is done to prevent the loss of balls to the high volumes of water in the shoreline. In addition to the standard Beachgolff® ball being asymmetrical in design (which prevents rolling into the ocean), additional distributed weight and other methods are under field-testing to create the XBG ball. We have a “non-ball” design that is promising, but the loss of the ball (or “non-ball”), still concerns us since it is a sort of like littering on the coast if the ball is lost. So we are looking at corn based biodegradable plastic for this application.
