As you know from the title, I’ve mentioned 3 critical words which dominate the lives of many men (and women) in the USA. Money, and greed have come to ruin the true spirit of what sport represents. Of course now you might be thinking that I’m going to put down corporate intrusion into sports, etc.
Well I will, but at the same time I’ll look at the good aspects of corporations in sports too.

I do find it disturbing that we now should accept corporate names on sports buildings that at one time had names of honorable people. “Respect” is a word people often claim a desire for, yet we as a society have marched onward to very little symbols of respect anywhere in the public realm. No examples to our youth of what respect for people is exists as it did at one time. Basketball is attempting to have their pros wear “decent” clothing to seem more “respectful”.

Baseball is fast losing it’s respect as a sport of “true” athletes due to issues with steroid use. Football is the modern day gladiators and I don’t think anyone cares what is done in that sport to increase the strength of players. Sports are so deep in commercialism that steroid use was being winked at in the name of the bottom-line. Money. Corporate sponsorship is about money, nothing else.

Is this what we want in our sporting events? A focus on money? What happened to the Olympic spirit of human performance for the sake of achieving what humanity was capable of? Yes, I grew up when the Olympics was not done by professionals. But I think that support to athletes makes for better performance due to increases in training time and mental focus. Yet I also am offended by the commercials everywhere I look in professional sports. Marketing continues to find new ways to saturate our minds.

More money for sports via commercialism has it’s perks of course. But is it worth it? A new game called Beachgolff® is coming to the shores of America soon. Am I looking for sponsors to help financially? Yes. Am I going to let them influence the sport as it develops? Do I have a choice? How much influence in sport comes from advertisers?

Reduced to the finest point in conclusion; spectators will continue watching sports to see human performance as we always have. And corporations will continue to muscle in wherever they can.

"When at the beach many dangers exsist that most people do not even think of."

Safety first!

Often spoken, and even more often forgotten about as the joy of a day at the beach intertwines in the mind of the average person. Safety first; what does it mean?

Precautions. When at the beach many dangers exsist that most people do not even think of. For example: How many of us think about falling rocks or land slides when at beaches with cliffs? or….. rising tides if on an adventure to a secluded spot? or…… jellyfish (jellies) that can do more than just sting? Shore is ruff.™ But the shore is also alot of fun!

How about the dangers from the giant ball of hydrogen that gives us life, but has an evil side too? Sun lotion/block of SPF15 is recommended as a minimum even if just going outside for a casual walk. Of course it depends on a persons skin type and the amount of sun tolerance their epidermis has acquired. But make no mistake about it, people that get alot of sun exposure often have skin cancer down the road. So protect your largest organ while at the beach and reapply that sunblock!

The beach is often very windy. Sand and other small particles can easily get in the eye/s while at the beach. Wear sunglasses, or for those that play Beachgolff®, we recommend sports eyegear that is strapped to the head. Modern sport goggles are made in very cool looking styles nowadays. In Beachgolff® we insist that players always wear eye protection.

And safety at the beach isn’t just for humans. When we visit the beach we are invading an ecosystem occupied by an enormous number of creatures that we often can’t even see. Plastic bags easily blow away from us and if in the ocean, can become a meal for a sea turtle that thinks it’s a jellyfish. And those six-pack plastic rings can cause animals trouble too. So it isn’t just unsightly litter that is often at the beach, lots of our garbage is deadly to sea creatures.

Surfrider.org is a great organization to join if you want to be part of a beach clean-up, or want to be involved in protecting your local surf. They have local chapters all along the U.S.A. and Australia. (surfrider.org.au)

So please, take care of yourself and those around you. Be safe!
